Brief Introduction to 10G SFP+ Transceiver

With the fast development of technology, 1G transmission rate can’t satisfy people’s demand any more. Therefore, 10G Ethernet is developed along the way to meet the need for high-performance servers, storage and interconnects. And the newest transceiver module standard is the small form-factor pluggable plus (SFP+), which has become the most popular socket on 10GE systems due to its smaller size and lower power. This passage intends to introduce SFP+ transceiver from three basic aspects, including definition, advantages and types.

What Is SFP+ Transceiver?

SFP+ transceiver is a compact, hot-pluggable transceiver used for both telecommunication and data communication applications. It is referred as an enhanced version of the SFP transceiver that can transmit data rates up to 10 Gbps. It has the same appearance and connector as the SFP, but it is smaller and can provide higher speed than SFP. Like other transceivers, SFP+ transceiver is hot-swappable which means that it can be switched in and out of the device without powering it down. And SFP+ transceiver can be utilized in 8Gbps fiber channel, 10 Gigabit Ethernet and optical transport network (OTN) standard OTU2. In addition, it is a popular industry format supported by many network component vendors.

Advantages of 10G SFP+ Transceiver

SFP+ transceiver comes with many outstanding advantages. It can cover various data rates for different communication standards like Ethernet, SONET (OC-192) or 10G fiber channel and any other interfaces with a data rate up to 10 Gbps. It has a more compact size than former X2, Xenpak and SFP which enables SFP+ transceiver available for installations with higher port density. SFP+ takes the advantage of lower power consumption for less than 1 w. Furthermore, SFP+ transceiver has simple design and superior high temperature performance, making it a cost effective way to connect a single network device to a wide variety of fiber cable distances.

Types of SFP+ Transceiver for 10 Gigabit Ethernet

SFP+ transceiver complaint with 10 Gigabit Ethernet standards can be classified into 10GBase-ZR SFP+, 10GBase-LRM SFP+, 10GBase-SR SFP+, 10GBase-ER SFP+, 10GBase-LR SFP+, etc. In the following part, I will briefly introduce the most commonly used types of SFP+ transceivers for 10 Gigabit Ethernet—10GBase-SR SFP+, 10GBase-LR SFP+, 10GBase-ER SFP+.

10GBase-SR SFP+

10GBase-SR (short range) SFP+ is designed for multimode fibers and uses 850nm lasers. It has a data transmission of up to 10.3125Gbps and can be used over multiple cabling options. When it is used over OM1, the 10GBase SFP+ has a maximum working distance of 33 m, as opposed to 82 m when applied over OM2 cabling. Usage of 10GBase-SR SFP+ standard over OM3 gives an extension of up to 300 m, while the usage over OM4 gives a maximum length of up to 400 m. Since OM3 and OM4 have further transmission distance and higher performance than OM1 and OM2, the industry preferred usage is to apply 10GBase-SR SFP+ over OM3 and OM4 to give a more structured optical cabling. By the way, OM3 and OM4 cabling are described as laser optimized fiber optic cables which are designed to be compatible with VCSELs to deliver low costs on power usage. Thus, compared to other 10G standards, the 10GBase-SR SFP+ has the lower power output and ultimately the lowest cost of usage. There is a 10GBase-SR SFP+ showing below.

10GBase-LR SFP+

The 10GBase-LR (long range) SFP+ is a port type for single-mode fibers and operates at a nominal wavelength of 1310 nm. 10GBase-LR transmitter is implemented with a Fabry-Pérot or distribute feedback (DFB) laser. Although DFB lasers are more expensive than VCSELs, their high power and longer wavelength allow efficient coupling into the tiny core of single-mode fiber over greater distances. Compared with 10GBase-SR, the maximum range of 10GBase-LR can be 10 km. The following picture is a 10GBase-LR SFP+.

10GBase-ER SFP+

10GBase-ER (extended range) SFP+ transmits over single-mode fibers and its operating wavelength is 1550 nm. This kind of SFP+ module is deployed to connect devices in different physical location up to 40 km in distance. It is widely used in large building, co-location facilities and carrier neutral internet exchange. The following image shows a 10GBase-ER SFP+.
